He’s been in the bitcoin game for a while and is the founder and CEO of Coinapult, a company that facilitates the transfer of bitcoins via SMS and email. He was formerly the marketing head for BitInstant and has been involved with SatoshiDICE, that Bitcoin gambling site that is killing bitcoin.

He’s decided that what bitcoin really needs to jumpstart this revolution is a small, crappy billboard in the middle of a strawberry field. A very obscure billboard actually.

Actually no, this isn’t a real thing and it never will be. Hot on the heels of the last incredible bitcoin mining machine sale, but lagging far behind perpetual preorder company Butterfly Labs, “Cryoniks, Inc.” appears and claims to have developed a miner that extracts nitrogen from the surrounding atmosphere, condenses it into liquid, and uses this liquid nitrogen to cool its secret and unrevealed (due to being trade secrets or just not existing) one terahash mining hardware.

The company then spent probably $400 on this press release, which was then picked up by numerous media outlets (most notably TechCrunch, oh wait, they realized what a load of crap this was and removed the article. Here’s a cached version which had been edited to reveal TechCrunch’s doubt after initial excitement) and reproduced as if it were a real news article instead of some PR lackey hyping up the scambox to find marks

Now this may set off alarms for you, me, or anyone else with a modicum of sense, but because this is Bitcoin, people have already lined up to throw their money at someone who is obviously lying. And holy Hell did they ever throw money at this. As of this writing, they claim to have 200 preorders to ship, and at $15,000 each, this means they’ve fleeced gullible bitcoiners out of three million dollars in a little over a week (if they’re to be believed and aren’t just lying to increase “investor” confidence.) They’ve since made a second “press release” with the most telling of statements:

â??Bitcoins is [sic] similar to the gold rush. You have people that will go out and pan for gold, and you have those that make the equipment like pans and jeans to sell to the gold miners. â? replies Chris Whiting when asked, why they do not mine their own Bitcoins.

Now don’t think that every bitcoiner with a bit of money to throw around is ridiculously gullible and willing to blindly hurl cash at everyone selling a phlogiston-powered gold-mining shovel. Here we see a warning on the bitcoin subreddit, with redditor ferroh stating “the fact that there are just 3D renders of the device, it is a pre-order, yet they have all these details in the FAQ of what the lights on the device mean is a red flag. The fact that you can “firmware update” to mine litecoins is a red flag.  The fact that it uses liquid nitrogen is a huge red flag.” I made the mistake of engaing him however, and he vehemently insisted that one must have concrete proof of a scam instead of just being sensible and knowing better.

There is no helping these people. Let them lose their money. If it weren’t bitcoin miners, it’d be Nigerian princes or speakers bought in a parking lot or ostrich farms or something.
